The pants role that Susan Graham, the mezzo-soprano, plays is a feature of lots of comic operas (Marriage of Figaro, etc.). it usually is the occasion for cross dressing nonsense, as in Der Rosenkavalier. Strauss is especially famous for the orchestrations in all of his operas. i will see it today. Can't wait.

    This 1953 recording conducted by Victor de Sabata at La Scala is likely the definitive recording of the opera. A 1964 video of the same cast at Covent Garden can be found on "You Tube."
